Bangor: Top lawyer, former Mayor Brountas dies
Former lawyer, municipal councillor and chairman of Nicholas P. Brountas was recalled Tuesday as a family man, gifted jurist and Gentleman.
Brountas, a second-generation Greek-American, died Monday at the age of 84 in a local medical facility.
In his sadness, the loss is Gov. John Baldacci, whose father, Robert Sr. Baldacci, served with Brountas on the Bangor City Council in the 1960’s. The two families has grown rapidly in the field of business, law and public service sectors.
“He was a handsome man - a true gentleman,” said the governor Tuesday, and added that Brountas whose specialties were undertaken, real estate and tax law, he was counsel for his parents.
Baldacci said Brountas is worth recalling, for his “old values. It was clear in the situation, but he did not try to impress people. We all think about his family. It goes we missed. ”

Brountas, served two successive terms in early November 1962, was president of the Council during the year 1964. His younger brothers, Arthur and George, followed in his footsteps, both on the Council and the presidency.

As a graduate of the University of Maine and at the Yale Law School, Nicholas Brountas belonged to numerous civil and professional groups, including the American Bar Association, the Bangor City Club, the Committee of remedies, Hi Army and the Advisory Committee State of Maine Judicial Ethics Committee.
In addition to his son David, Brountas leaves his wife Helen, Bangor, and the youngest son, Nicholas, of New York City.
